What does the daily schedule of a student look like?

A student’s day generally begins at 7:30 in the morning and ends at around 7 in the evening. This varies from student to student and depends on the courses they have selected. Although a student’s day may stretch from 7:30 in the morning to 7 in the evening, students generally do not have back to back classes. A daily schedule of a student generally comprises of around three classes per day on an average and is usually interspersed with club programs and committee meetings.

How long are the summer and winter breaks? Are students given holiday homework?

The summer break extends from mid-May to the beginning of August while the winter break extends stretches over the month of December. Although students aren’t provided with holiday homework, students are required to complete integral part of their four year program at SSLA, namely their community outreach project, internship program and any requirements of their dissertation. The aforementioned integral aspects of the liberal arts program are spread out over the summer and winter breaks across the four years that students spend at SSLA.

What are the attendance and backlog policies?

There is a minimum requirement of 75% attendance for every course the student is enrolled in, as well as 75% aggregate attendance. Lack of the minimum required attendance will result in TNG/CNG (Term Not Granted / Course Not Granted), where the student will not be allowed to appear for the Semester End Evaluation (SEE). The student will have to clear all the exams related to the TNG/CNG in the following semester as backlog exams. Attendance noncompliance will also impact the Continuous Assessment (CA) grades. Furthermore, students will not be allowed to appear for the Semester End Evaluations (SEE), if attendance is less than 75%, including any time period of hospitalisation. Special considerations will be given to students for the following reasons:

  • Hospitalisation
  • Death in immediate family.
  • Representing SSLA in an SSLA approved event.

Students are expected to fill in a leave form and submit it to the admin office for attendance condonation.

If a student scores less than 40% in the Continuous Assessment (CA) or the Semester End Evaluation (SEE, the student will receive a backlog. This would require the student to complete Continuous Assessments (CA) and Semester End Evaluations (SEE), as applicable for the course in the following semester.

The following situations will result in a backlog:

  • In case a student fails in the Internal/ Continuous Assessment or the External/ Semester End Evaluation component of any course, the student will have to appear for a backlog in that respective component.
  • In case a student has a CNG / TNG he /she cannot appear for the Semester End Evaluation component of that course, thus resulting in a backlog.
  • In case a student travels abroad for a Semester Exchange/ Global Immersion Programme, and the course has not been mapped with those conducted abroad, both components will fall in the backlog category. This will be deemed a deferred examination if given in the immediate semester after coming back from the GIP.
  • A failed backlog course.

What is the basic course structure at SSLA?

There are 19 core courses and 8 electives which are compulsory and which every student will complete across the 8 semesters along with 1 major specialization and 1 minor specialization. The students therefore study 19 core (compulsory) courses + 8 general (electives) + 1 Minor specialization subject (6 papers) + 1 Major specialization subject (10 papers)

Specialization courses (which are in the form of Majors and Minors) are chosen in the 2nd semester and are taught from the 3rd semester onwards.
